What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
The abbreviated name of plasma enriched with platelets (blood cells) developed for skin rejuvenation process in recent years is PRP treatment (Platelet Rich Plasma).
PRP application is carried out by injecting 10-20 cc of blood taken from the person to the areas to be treated again after undergoing certain procedures. In PRP, the blood taken from the person is subjected to a special process (centrifuge). As a result of this process, the plasma is separated and injected back into the areas to be treated. This plasma contains abundant cells called platelets. The main task of platelets (thrombocytes) is to ensure blood clotting. The density of platelets (thrombocytes) in the serum obtained by the PRP method is 2-3 times higher than that in the blood, and the growth factors in these platelets (thrombocytes) play an important role in the healing, repair, regeneration and wound healing of the skin.
Many factors such as sun rays, smoking, pregnancy, stressful life style or unbalanced diet cause premature aging symptoms by wearing out the skin. When any damage occurs in our tissues, our blood collects the clot cells to this tissue and initiates a repair process. The purpose of PRP application is to deliver the growth factors in platelets (thrombocytes) in greater numbers than can be transferred to the target tissue by blood circulation. Thus, with the effect of these growth factors, the repair of the target tissue begins rapidly and strongly.
What should be considered before PRP?
One week before the treatment, the use of vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginkgo (temple tree), garlic, fish oil pills, flaxseed, fatty acids, multivitamin tablets, which contain blood thinners, should be discontinued. Apart from these, if there is regular use of drugs such as anticoagulants or blood pressure medication, this should be shared with the physician. Before PRP, excessive sun and extreme heat should also be avoided. Alcohol consumption and smoking should be stopped a few days before the treatment. If the procedure will be performed under sedation anaesthesia, you should fast for at least 6 hours beforehand.
What are the benefits of PRP treatment?
PRP therapy is used in various areas of the body. It is a very natural and reliable method as it is a procedure performed through the person’s own blood. With PRP, it is aimed to heal itself by stimulating and activating the body’s own repair mechanisms.
PRP treatment creates many positive effects on the person’s body:
- It gives elasticity and shine to the skin.
- It prevents hair loss and gives vitality to the hair.
- Removes wrinkles and prevents volume loss.
- Reconstructs the skin in skin damage such as wounds and cracks.
- It provides rapid structuring of the skin after processes such as laser.
- It removes signs of aging in areas such as face, hands and arms, inner legs, neck and décolleté.
Are there any side effects of the PRP treatment?
Since it is a natural method, it is very reliable and has no side effects. However, it is very important to process the blood taken from the person in an area suitable for sterile conditions. Choosing an experienced doctor is an important factor. Infection, nerve injury, pain, bleeding and tissue damage at the injection site may occur, albeit rarely.
What does PRP treatment do and in which areas is it applied?
PRP treatment, which is performed by using cells called platelets in the blood, is frequently used for many purposes in the field of medicine. The main ones can be listed as follows:
- Increasing the elasticity of the skin
- Skin regeneration
- Wrinkle reduction and skin restructuring
- Elimination of sagging skin
- Hair treatment
- Treatment of patients with diabetes
- Relief of varicose-vein related pain
- Healing of tendon, nerve bone injuries
- Acceleration of healing after dental implants
- Back and neck hernia treatment
- Removal of calcifications in the knee
- Meniscus treatment
- Treatment of the heel spur
How is PRP treatment applied to the hair area?
The PRP content obtained from the patient’s own blood is applied to the scalp with special injections. Hair PRP is generally performed in 3 sessions at 2–3 week intervals. However, the frequency of sessions may vary according to the current condition of the hair and scalp.
Benefits of hair PRP
In this treatment, it is aimed to revitalise the aging scalp and to grow hair again from this area. Hair PRP helps the hair follicles to be nourished and the hair to grow with better quality, volume and density. Hair PRP gives successful results, especially in people who are genetically prone to hair loss. Hair PRP procedure to be performed after hair transplantation also increases the success of the results obtained
How is PRP treatment done?
For PRP treatment, a small amount of blood taken from the arm of the person, such as 10-20 cc, is used. The collected blood is rotated in a centrifuge device at a high speed of 3,000 for 10 minutes. Afterwards, blood cells called platelets (thrombocyte) and plasma part rich in growth factors are obtained from this blood. This supplied mixture is injected into the determined parts of the skin with a very fine-tipped PRP needle. Thus, the increase of collagen and elastin in the skin is ensured, and the development and renewal of the skin in a natural way occurs. To get good results from PRP treatment, it is necessary to apply 3-4 sessions with 2-3 week intervals.
After the treatment, the person can return to her daily life immediately. No time off from work or school or home rest is needed. During the treatment, the person should avoid sunlight and solarium. In PRP applied to the hair, the patient should not take a shower on the first day, and then Ph-balanced products compatible with the skin should be used. After PRP, blood thinners should not be used for a week, and smoking and alcohol consumption should be stopped, which will shorten the recovery period.
After the application, slight bruising and redness occur for a few days. These disappear after a short time. Since it is a procedure performed using the person’s own blood, it is completely natural and no allergic reaction occurs. Those who have PRP treatment may feel a very slight pain in the area where the injection is made for a day or two. Strenuous activities should be avoided for an average of one to two weeks.
When will the results of PRP treatment become visible?
After the PRP treatment, a healthy shine begins to appear on the skin of the person. Especially after the 3rd or 4th application, the effect begins to be more pronounced. However, for permanent results, at least 3-4 injections should be made with 2-3 week intervals. Afterwards, the permanence of the results is preserved with an application to be made every 6 or 12 months.
Can PRP and other skin rejuvenation methods be used together?
PRP treatment can be applied together with stem cell treatment, mesotherapy, laser or radiofrequency methods. After these applications, the use of PRP in serum increases the effect of the applied method and accelerates the healing process.
Who is PRP treatment applied to?
PRP treatment can be applied to people of all ages. However, it is not recommended to apply PRP treatment to
- pregnant women,
- those with coagulation problems,
- those who have problems in platelet count or function
- those with cancer or to areas where cancer treatment has been applied.
Is PRP and stem cell the same method?
While PRP is a treatment performed by injection of serum obtained from blood, stem cells are obtained by separating them from adipose tissues. PRP ensures that new stem cells come to the applied area and increase the efficiency of these stem cells. While PRP protects healthy skin tissue, it accelerates the healing and repair of the skin. Stem cell therapy, on the other hand, provides the formation of new and healthy cells and, in this way, the healing and regeneration of skin tissue. In certain cases, more satisfactory results can be obtained by applying stem cell and PRP treatments simultaneously.
