What is Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)?
All procedures performed by aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgeons in order to increase the breast size of women with small breasts by inserting implant (silicone prosthesis) or injecting fat according to their own body structure and to improve it by changing its shape define breast augmentation.
Why is Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Performed?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed to increase the natural breast size ratios of the patients, to obtain a more symmetrical appearance and to create an aesthetically pleasing breast profile. The main reasons for the need for breast augmentation surgery, which is highly sought after by women around the world, can be listed as follows:
- Absence of breast tissue,
- Insufficient breast tissue,
- Volume loss in breast tissue,
- Sagging breast tissue,
- The difference in shape between the two breasts,
- The breasts are not large enough,
- Breast loss due to cancer.

What is the Process Before Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)?
Breast augmentation surgery is a process that requires planning. Before surgery, it is decided what kind of procedure will be performed with the examination of the surgeon. In this process, detailed conversations and controls are made about breast size, texture and structure. In line with the patient’s expectation, it is decided what kind of procedures will be performed and the most suitable silicones with different properties for the patient. Thus, silicone selection is made for the ideal size, shape and texture for the patient’s body. In this process, there are a few important details that the patient should pay attention to. These can be listed as follows:
What Should Patients Consider Before Breast Augmentation Surgery?
- Smoking should be stopped two weeks before the operation.
- Alcohol should be avoided in the last week before surgery.
- Blood thinners such as aspirin and herbal supplements should not be taken within ten days before surgery.
How is Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery Performed?
The surgeon, who decides what kind of intervention will be performed on the breast and what type of silicone to place, opens a thin incision under or on the side of the patient’s breast under operating room conditions and places the silicones in the breast. The surgery takes 2-3 hours according to the planning.
How are Breast Prostheses (Silicones – Implants) Placed?
Placement of breast prostheses is among the questions frequently asked by patients. Prosthetic implants to be used in breast augmentation procedures are placed according to the doctor’s surgery planning. Options are:
- with the incision made from the armpit area,
- with the incision made from the lower part of the dark circle (areola) around the nipple,
- with the incision made from the lower part of the fold area where the breast meets the chest (Inframamarial Fold Incision)
- endoscopically through an incision made in the umbilicus.
How to Choose a Breast Prosthesis (Silicone – Implant)?
With the development of medicine and technology, breast prosthesis (silicone) options have also increased considerably and breast prostheses in various shapes and sizes with different features have begun to be produced. For this reason, the plastic surgeon informs the patient by choosing the best prosthesis according to the body structure and size of the patient.
The prosthesis to be applied is decided according to criteria such as the patient’s age, height, shape of the rib cage and body measurements. The choice is made by evaluating the patient’s preference and the physician’s recommendation together.
Prostheses produced in different volumes are drop (anatomical) or round in shape. Round shaped prostheses make the upper part of the breast appear fuller and the décolleté area is revealed. The upper part of the drop prosthesis is flatter and creates a more natural appearance as it enlarges the lower part of the breast. Drop prostheses are mostly preferred in patients who are underweight and in post-cancer breast repairs.
Structure of Breast Prostheses
Prostheses, which can be considered the pioneers of breast prostheses used today, were first discovered in 1963. These prostheses, created with silicone gel content, have been renewed in parallel with technological and medical developments until today and have become today’s comfortable and healthy silicone gel breast prostheses.
How Many Years Do Silicones Last and How Long is the Warranty?
All breast silicones produced with smart technology are given a lifetime warranty by the manufacturers. Breast prostheses used today and produced with advanced technology are extremely safe against punctures and leaks. However, after a long time (10-15 years), it is recommended by doctors to check the breasts and silicones due to excessive changes in body structure.
Do Silicone Breast Prostheses Cause Any Disease?
Studies show that breast silicone prostheses do not cause any health problems. However, every surgery has its own risks. In order to minimize these risks, it is important to perform this surgical procedure in a good and clean healthcare facility. However, the selection of the surgeon and his team and the use of the best silicone prosthesis in breast augmentation processes is the most important issue.
Recovery Process After Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery
It is very important for patients to strictly follow the doctor’s recommendations after the surgery. The shape and size desired by the patient and deemed appropriate by the surgeon are provided aesthetically, but a slight feeling of tightness, pain and ache may occur in the breast after the surgery. In other words, the patient may feel pain for the first five days, this is a very natural situation and the patient is relieved with painkillers prescribed by the doctor.
There is a special tape and wrap on the breast. Drains (a vacuum system) placed in the same place as the prosthesis are removed within a few days. If the patient does not develop any complications after the surgery, she can go home one day later. Lying face down and heavy activities should be avoided for two months. After all dressings and controls are completed, the final result of breast augmentation surgery appears after 6-8 months, depending on the type and condition of the surgery.
What are the Risks of Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery?
Since breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, there are risks related to surgery as well as risks related to anaesthesia. The biggest problem encountered in patients is bleeding. If the bleeding is too much, re-operation is required for the formed hematoma. There is also a small risk of infection. However, these risks are minimised in the right surgical process.
Do Silicone Prostheses Affect the Motherhood and Breastfeeding Process?
Prostheses fitted to women with breast augmentation surgery do not normally affect the pregnancy process and the postpartum breastfeeding period. The surgery does not have a negative effect on the milk ducts or milk glands.
Is Massage Necessary After Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery?
After the surgery, patients are recommended to massage their breasts according to the type, shape and placement plan of the silicones, with the recommendation of the doctor.
Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) with Fat Injection
Fat injection is preferred as a supportive method in breast augmentation and shaping surgeries. In order for this method to be applied, there must be enough fat tissue in the body of the person. The application of this method is limited because patients applying for breast augmentation are mostly slim.
Breast augmentation with fat injection alone does not give permanent results, and it is not preferred because the procedure needs to be repeated. Injection is used to obtain a more natural appearance in enlargement procedures, which are mostly performed with breast prostheses.
However, in some women who do not want their breasts to be surgically cut and silicone placed, or in patients with autoimmune diseases, we prefer the breast augmentation method by injecting their own fat into the breast.
Advantages of breast augmentation with fat injection:
- It can be used in patients who do not want a silicone breast prosthesis.
- In patients who cannot use silicone prostheses for health reasons (in autoimmune diseases)
- This method is preferred especially when there is a slight inequality (asymmetry) between the breasts.
- Breast augmentation with fat injection is very comfortable, surgery and recovery processes are short.
- No foreign substance is placed in the breast. Only one’s own fat is used.
Are There Any Non-Surgical Breast Enlargement methods?
Some herbal oils or medicines are used in non-surgical breast enlargement. These non-surgical methods do not provide permanent results and are not recommended for patients.
Do Silicone Prostheses Inserted to Sagging Breasts Eliminate the Sagging Problem?
No. The law of gravity, the passing of time and the weight of silicone prostheses prevent this. During the pre-operative examination, your surgeon also evaluates the sagging condition of your breast along with your complaint of smallness of the breast. In such cases, your surgeon, who plans the surgery, can fulfil your aesthetic expectations by combining breast lift (mastopexy) surgery and augmentation surgery.
Silicone Prosthesis Prices
“Silicone prosthesis prices”, “silicone prosthesis prices 2021”, “breast silicone prices” and “breast augmentation surgery price” are among the frequently asked questions by patients planning this surgery. There are many factors that determine the cost of the surgery. The general condition of the patient, the qualities of the prosthesis to be used, the hospital where the surgery is performed, and the knowledge, skills and experience of your surgeon are some of these factors.

Who Can Undergo Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery can be easily performed in patients with insufficient and small breast tissue, sagging breasts, and differences in shape and size between the two breasts. Patients who experience breast deformation due to age, birth, breastfeeding, weight loss and genetic factors can also achieve the body image they want with breast augmentation surgery.
Check-ups Before Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery
Before breast augmentation surgery, breast ultrasound or mammography must be taken. These imaging results are also important for the follow-up of postoperative process.
Methods Used in Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)
Silicone breast prostheses are mostly used in this surgery. Risks such as explosion, leakage and allergic reaction are extremely low in new generation breast prostheses, which are produced very reliably with the developing technology. After a detailed examination, when planning the surgery, the area where the silicone will be placed (under or on top of the muscle) is decided.
How is Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery Done?
Breast silicone with the volume and shape determined during the examination is placed with an operation that takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. Since the surgical incisions are made under the breast, nipple or armpit, the scars are not very obvious after the surgery. Patients can be discharged the next day.
It is normal to have a slight feeling of tension and some pain after this surgery, in which general anaesthesia is used. These pains can be minimised with pain killers and other methods used in accordance with the physician’s advice. Patients should not lie face down and avoid heavy activities for about 2 months.
Is Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement) Surgery Risky?
“Is breast augmentation surgery risky?” We often come across the question. The term chest is used to express the area of the body between the shoulders and necks and the abdomen. This region includes the rib cage, lungs, and heart. The part that we plastic surgeons are interested in is the organs called “breast”, which contain breast tissue, adipose tissue, milk glands and nipple.
This surgery, which is performed without any problems with today’s medical technology, results in a high level of satisfaction of our patients. Reviews of patients who have had silicone implants are mostly positive.
Do Breast Prostheses Interfere with Breastfeeding?
Breast prostheses do not prevent pregnancy and lactation. However, since the healing of the tissues continues in the first 6 months after the surgery, pregnancy is not recommended during this period. Considering the deformation that pregnancy and breastfeeding processes will create on the breasts, it is recommended to plan aesthetic procedures for the breast at a later date.
Mammography After Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)
Prostheses do not prevent mammography. This examination is performed both before the operation and one year after the operation for control purposes. The implants will show up as empty spaces on the mammogram. Calcifications that may occur due to fat injection used in augmentation surgery may affect the results of mammography. Patients should inform the physician taking the mammography about this issue and should not disrupt their routine breast controls.
Recovery Process After Breast Surgery
Patients usually stay in the hospital overnight after surgery. In cases where breast prostheses are placed under the muscle, there may be limitation in arm movements for a few days. Patients should wear special bras for several weeks. Dissolving sutures are used in the surgery and it is not necessary to take stitches. In the first postoperative period, complaints such as swelling, numbness and bruising may occur, but these disappear spontaneously in a short time. Patients can return to work within 3-4 days. They can do sports that do not require excessive effort 2-3 weeks after the surgery. After two months, they can start sports that require heavy effort.
What is Capsule Contracture?
Breast augmentation surgery performed by experienced plastic surgeons are very comfortable for the patients and the recovery process is easy. Apart from the pain, swelling, bruising and loss of sensation that may occur after breast augmentation surgery, a condition called “capsule contracture” may be experienced in 3% of the patients.
Although rare, capsular contracture is defined as the body’s formation of a membrane around the breast prosthesis and associated hardening and narrowing. If this membrane is thin, it is not a problem. A medium-thickness membrane can cause hardness in the breasts. This condition can be resolved with massage or additional surgery. However, in severe cases, the prosthesis and the capsule should be removed.
Is There a Risk of Breast Cancer Associated with Breast Prostheses?
There is no scientific data indicating that the prostheses used are related to the formation of breast cancer. On the contrary, a possible development of breast cancer can be detected at an early stage thanks to mammograms that patients with prosthesis should routinely repeat once a year. The breast prostheses used today are produced with advanced technology and materials are compatible with the human body. As they do not cause breast cancer formation, silicone prostheses are used safely in the reconstruction of the breast following breast cancer treatment.
Celebrities Who Have Had Silicone Prostheses
Silicone breast prostheses are also widely preferred by famous names. In addition to foreign names such as Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox, Petek Dinçöz, Hande Erçel, Serenay Sarıkaya and Hande Erçel from Turkey had also breast silicones.
