What is an Arm Lift?
An upper arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and loose skin on your underarms. Genetics, growing older and significant weight loss or gain can all contribute to sagging arm skin, which can’t be tightened by exercise and diet alone. An arm lift procedure is the most effective and permanent way to recontour arms.
The surgery can be combined with other body lift or body contouring procedures, or with liposuction.
Who is a Good Candidate for an Arm Lift?
Good candidates for an upper arm lift are non-smokers with no serious medical conditions, who are at a stable weight and not significantly overweight.
What Can You Expect During Arm Lift Recovery?
For four to six weeks, you’ll need to limit your range of motion and keep your incision sites stable. It’s important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion or motion during the time of healing.
Your arms may be wrapped in bandages or enclosed in compression sleeves (especially if you’ve had arm lipo, too), to keep swelling down and restrict movement. The bandages should be worn for up to 48 hours post-procedure, while you may be instructed to wear compression garments for up to four weeks.
Dissolvable stitches will be reabsorbed by the body, usually within a week or two.
The initial post-surgery recovery can be uncomfortable, but the discomfort tends to abate after three or four days. Most patients feel tightness than pain. You are going to be on pain medication for relief.
Arm lift incisions take four to eight weeks to heal completely, and you’ll also need to avoid strenuous activity until you’re fully healed. If your work is physically demanding—especially if it involves lifting—plan on taking off at least one month to recover fully.
Even if you have a desk job, expect to be out of the office for at least ten days. You can’t drive for ten days.
You’ll be able to ease back strenuous activity 3 months later.
When Will You See Results from Arm Lift Surgery and How Long Will They Last?
You should notice slimmer upper arms right after your surgery but likely won’t see full results until the bruising and swelling subside, which can take several weeks to a few months.
The results of arm lift surgery will be long-lasting, provided that you maintain a stable weight and general fitness. As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness, but most of your improvement should be relatively permanent.
