Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is the mechanical peeling of the upper layer of the skin with sanding bits that are attached to a special device to remove irregularities, marks, stains, and wrinkles on the skin. The peeling process is profound. The upper layer of the skin called the epidermis and part of the lower layer called the dermis is peeled off. After that, due to the cells in the remaining portion of the lower layer, the skin is renewed and has a much smoother and more vibrant structure. During the dermabrasion process, peeling of the skin with special diamond tips takes place slowly and in a controlled manner.

How is Dermabrasion Performed?

Some issues to take into consideration before dermabrasion:

  • Blood-thinning medications such as aspirin should be avoided.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption should be interrupted.
  • If there is any active acne, the process should be postponed.
  • Food containing vitamin E should be avoided for a while.
  • Attention should be paid to adequate water consumption.

During dermabrasion application, local or general anaesthesia is applied according to the condition of the area to be treated. Generally, dermabrasion is applied to the entire face. Otherwise, a uniform colour cannot be obtained on the face and tone differences occur. Even one session is sufficient in most cases, which takes about 1.5 hours, sometimes more than one session might be required depending on the problem.

For peeling, a device that quickly turns the stone with a diamond or wire sander is used. With the help of this device, all of the upper layers and if necessary, part of the lower layer of the skin are removed. There are different application methods for dermabrasion.

What are Dermabrasion Methods?

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is the process of peeling the upper layer of the skin with high-pressure devices that spray aluminium oxide microcrystals. In this process, healthy tissue under the skin is revealed step by step. Thus, a much healthier and lively skin is obtained. The number of sessions that should be done with a week interval varies depending on the condition of the skin.

Salabrasion Application
Salabrasion is the process of dermabrasion for tattoo removal by treating this area with salt and removing the paint. In this process, the longer the salt remains, the more successful the process is. However, since the risk of scarring increases, the procedure must be done by a specialist.

What is the Price of Dermabrasion?

It is against the law in Turkey for the healthcare organisations including private practices to indicate prices online for interventions, treatments or consultations. Please contact us by calling or texting ?+90 541 334 3484 (WhatsApp available) or ☏ +90 212 257 1515 for the cost of the intervention or any other enquiries related to the intervention.

Dermabrasion Frequently Asked Questions

How is the healing process after dermabrasion?

After dermabrasion, dressings and a pomade are applied to the face. Redness and swelling might occur after facial dermabrasion. However, this is temporary and disappears within a few days. Mild pain may be felt while eating. Crusts might occur. In this case, the crusts should not be touched. Male patients should avoid shaving for several days. Although slight marks arise, these will heal in a short time. Approximately after a week, the patient can return to his daily life. The complete recovery process takes place six months on average. Those who have dermabrasion should avoid sunlight in this process and sunscreen cream should be used when going out.

Who can have dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a procedure applicable to all age groups. However, the recovery process is longer and more difficult in older patients. People who have darker skin have a higher risk of scarring. Therefore, support should be obtained from an experienced doctor. Also;

  • Dermabrasion should not be applied to people with pathologies such as infection or herpes on the face.
  • Those who use isotretinoin should not have this procedure.
  • People who have an allergic reaction to anything should discuss this with their doctor.
  • Preferably, the procedure should not be performed in the summer.

How is dermabrasion different from other peeling procedures?

Dermabrasion is a mechanical procedure and is performed under local or general anaesthesia if it is applied to wider areas. Anaesthesia is not applied in chemical peeling. Even the most in-depth chemical peel application cannot have an effect as strong as the dermabrasion. Laser peeling, on the other hand, is a process using rays and its impact is limited.

Are there any side effects of the dermabrasion intervention?

There are no severe side effects. People can usually return to social life or work after the intervention. However, very few people may experience redness after dermabrasion which can last around 24 hours.
