What is Head and Neck Surgery?

The term head and neck surgery covers the treatments of head and neck related medical problems due to various reasons such as cancer, occupational accidents or firearm injuries.

Microsurgical Reconstruction of Head and Neck Surgery

Example: Jaw tumours
Many parts/organs of the head and neck region can be repaired and reconstructed by microsurgery. For instance, either partial or total the resection of mandible due to tumour presence is performed in some cases. This procedure causes a large amount of tissue loss (ablation) in the mandibular region, which would have a negative effect on the life quality of the patient. At this point, microsurgery steps in as a solution. Bone, skin and surrounding vein tissues are resected from the leg, inguinal region, or back and transplanted to the tumour ablation site for the reconstruction of the jaw. Veins of the transplanted tissue are sutured end-to-end via a microscope to maintain the blood flow.
Example: Firearm Injuries
Damages of the nose, the upper and the lower jaw due to firearm injuries could damage the life quality of the patient. In such cases, arm, hip and leg tissue transplant to the face could be performed.
Example: Oesophagus
Oesophageal tissue loss due to tumours can be repaired with the skin flaps prepared from the forearm for reconstruction via microsurgery. In the case of facial paralysis due to accidents or tumours, muscle and nerve transplants are also applied to recover the movement ability of the region. Thus, within the time, the paralysed region could function.
Example: Parry-Romberg Syndrome
Parry-Romberg Syndrome is characterised by the progressive atrophy of the skin, soft tissue, fat and bone tissues of the face. This could be unilateral or bilateral. In the treatment, grafts from the back or abdominal region are used as filling materials. Microsurgical procedures are used to reconstruct the deformity of the face.
