What is Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)?

MedicallyRhinoplastyRhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is one of the most frequently performed medical aesthetic procedures worldwide. Through this surgical procedure, the shape, length, and width of the nose can be altered to create a more aesthetically pleasing nose that complements the facial features. Preferred by both men and women for both health and aesthetic reasons, rhinoplasty allows patients to achieve a stronger nasal bridge and correct congenital or acquired deformities. This surgery can also reshape the angle between the lips and the nose.

Important: Individuals considering rhinoplasty should have their nasal tissues assessed by the surgeon during the examination to determine if they are suitable for the aesthetic operation. Rhinoplasty, where incorrect intervention can have very noticeable consequences, should be performed by experienced plastic surgeons who are experts in their field and have a successful track record of satisfied patients.

For what purposes is rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty surgery aims not only to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance but also to improve a person’s health. Therefore, there are two answers to the question of what purposes rhinoplasty is performed for;

  • Firstly, this procedure is a purely aesthetic intervention performed by individuals who are dissatisfied with the shape and appearance of their nose.
  • Secondly, it is also applied to people who experience breathing problems such as nasal congestion.

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, improves the aesthetic appearance of the nose and also allows for easier breathing. These surgeries, which reshape the nose to the desired form while eliminating factors that hinder nasal airflow, are also called “septorhinoplasty.” This surgery is performed for both health and aesthetic purposes. Septorhinoplasty is often suitable for patients who complain of nasal congestion.

In both cases, it has been observed that individuals who have undergone nose reshaping surgery and are satisfied with the results continue their lives with more self-confidence and are more comfortable and happier in their social lives.

How is Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetic Surgery) Performed?

In rhinoplasty, the reshaping of the nose should be planned according to the characteristic features of the face. In this surgery, interventions targeting cartilage, bone, and soft tissues are used to reshape the nose and improve the patient’s breathing.

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can be performed in two ways: open or closed. Sometimes these two methods are combined. Today, expert surgeons in nose surgery choose and apply either of these two methods, or a combination of both, depending on the existing deformity in their patients.

In open rhinoplasty, in addition to incisions inside the nostrils, an incision is also made at the tip of the nose, while in closed rhinoplasty, the surgery is performed through incisions made inside the nostrils. This procedure is supported by a small camera if necessary. Whether open, closed, or a combination of these two methods, rhinoplasty surgery involves interventions targeting cartilage, bone, and soft tissues to reshape the nose and improve the patient’s breathing. The operation typically lasts between 1 and 2.5 hours, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure.

After rhinoplasty surgery

Cold compresses should be applied to the area on the first day after surgery. While patients may experience pain, swelling, and bruising, these are temporary. Pain and discomfort are minimal, and patients are given painkillers regularly on the first day to control them. The splint (plaster cast or plastic bandage) is removed after one week, and the bandages are removed the following week. Complete healing and the nose taking its final shape take 1-1.5 years. Patients are advised to come for follow-up appointments at 3, 6, and 12 months.

What is filler application in rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, like other medical and aesthetic procedures, has different application techniques. Expert doctors may use different options to achieve success and the correct result. Filler application in nose aesthetics can be one of these options for the correct surgery. Filler application is particularly preferred for patients who are aesthetically focused, do not have major anatomical deformities in their nose, and do not experience breathing problems. In filler application, a simple injection procedure involves injecting a filler material (hyaluronic acid) into areas of mild deformation in the nose (e.g., a slight nasal hump, drooping nasal tip, irregularities on the nasal bridge, etc.) to correct the deformed area. It is eliminated by filling it..

Just like filler injections, nose reshaping is a frequently preferred method in rhinoplasty. In nose reshaping, this method is generally applied to individuals seeking only an aesthetic improvement, not to patients with severe breathing problems. During this simple procedure, sharp points, protrusions, and excess tissue of the nose are reduced by grinding. Although performed during surgery, the healing process is shorter because it doesn’t involve any bone-related procedures. Nose reshaping is usually done to shave away the nasal hump. In cases where the nasal hump is very large, rhinoplasty may be recommended. For nose reshaping, please click here.

Is non-surgical rhinoplasty possible?

Yes, there are non-surgical nose reshaping procedures. These include:

  • Threading techniques; suspending or lifting the nose with a thread.
  • Dermal filler treatments; non-surgical nose reshaping with fillers.
  • Botox applications include correcting the nasolabial fold and lifting the tip of the nose with Botox.

The tip of the nose can be lifted using surgical threads. Filler injections can correct and fill in protrusions and curvatures on the nasal bridge, creating a straighter and more curved appearance. Procedures can also be performed on the nasal tip, allowing for a slight lift. Botox injections are generally used to correct the nasolabial angle and lift the tip. Non-surgical rhinoplasty procedures can be applied to patients who do not want surgery and have very minimal nasal deformities. For successful results, suitable patients should be selected before these procedures are performed. It is not possible to achieve successful results in patients with severe nasal deformities. Significant breathing problems are not resolved after these procedures.

Can the tip of the nose droop after rhinoplasty?

When rhinoplasty is performed by plastic surgeons specializing in nose surgeries, the condition known as nasal tip drooping does not occur. In modern rhinoplasty, the front part of the nose is supported with cartilage grafts. This type of graft support prevents the physiological nasal tip drooping that may occur over time.

Is there an age limit for rhinoplasty surgery?

Specialist doctors assess whether a patient’s muscle and bone structure is sufficiently developed before performing rhinoplasty. Although there is no official age limit for nose surgery in Turkey, 16-17 years old is considered the lower limit for women and 17-18 years old for men.

Can patients with sinusitis have rhinoplasty?

There is no problem with patients with sinusitis undergoing rhinoplasty. However, it is more appropriate for patients with acute sinusitis to first address the underlying causes of the condition and then have surgery. In patients with chronic sinusitis, treatment for chronic sinusitis can be combined with rhinoplasty in the same surgery, in collaboration with an ENT specialist.

Is there an appropriate time to have nose surgery?

There is no specific time or season that would be advantageous for patients undergoing rhinoplasty. If the appropriate conditions are met, surgery can be performed in any season. Depending on their occupation, some patients experience increased post-operative problems in very hot weather. However, if attention is paid to the sun and its effects in the summer, surgical nose procedures can be performed without any problems. Patients who will have rhinoplasty in the summer should know that they can enter pools and the sea with their doctor’s permission.

Does rhinoplasty also correct a patient’s breathing problems?

Patients who have breathing problems through their nose and want to have rhinoplasty have their breathing problems identified during the pre-operative doctor’s examination, and these problems are corrected during the rhinoplasty operation.

What should be considered before surgery?

Patients should quit smoking approximately 1-2 weeks before surgery. They should discontinue the use of blood-thinning medications and herbal teas. Patients should inform their doctor of any medications they need to take during their appointment so that the treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

What are the risks of nose surgery?

As with any surgery, there are some risks after rhinoplasty, such as bleeding and infection. These possibilities are minimized with a detailed pre-operative evaluation. Patients do not experience serious problems after surgeries performed by an experienced plastic surgeon and their team.

Is there a risk of death during nose surgery?

With advancements in technology, rhinoplasty surgeries are performed in a highly safe and comfortable manner. Plastic surgeons would never perform surgery if there were any conditions that would prevent the patient from undergoing the procedure or that posed a risk.

Male rhinoplasty

In male patients, the goal is to preserve their facial features and create straighter, more masculine contours without excessively reducing the size of the nose. These surgeries prioritize maintaining masculine characteristics, avoiding excessive lifting or thinning of the nose.

Post-operative recovery process

Patients are usually discharged the day after surgery. They can read books and watch television within 2-3 days. They can return to work after the splint (plastic bandage) is removed. The surgical appearance disappears in approximately 3 weeks.
