Reconstructing the Ear

What is Ear Reconstruction?

In cases of absent or misshapen ears (microtia), the preferred medical treatment is what is known as ear reconstruction. This treatment usually begins at age 5 and requires 3-4 surgeries to create an ear that resembles the child’s other ear. If any problems arise during these surgeries, the number of surgeries increases, and the surgical method needs to be changed. An alternative to surgery for ear reconstruction is the use of prosthetic ears.

What are the details of ear reconstruction surgery?
If the surgery is performed in childhood, all stages are done under general anesthesia. In adults, some stages of ear reconstruction surgery are performed under local anesthesia, while others are performed under general anesthesia.

  1. Operation:Usually for the removal of deformed cartilage,
  2. Operation:To implant a cartilage scaffold, prepared from rib cartilage, under the skin in the ear region,
  3. Operation:By placing a skin graft behind this cartilage, the ear can be lifted and the earlobe can be adapted to its proper position.
  4. Operation:It is done for revision to make some corrections.

All new ear reconstruction surgeries result in surgical scars both in the ear area and on the front wall of the rib cage. For the cartilage framework of the ear, “implantAlthough ready-made materials called “expansion splints” are available, the patient’s own rib cartilage is generally preferred, which requires more care. Sometimes, the process can be shortened by placing a tissue expander in the first or second surgery. Patients who have a tissue expander placed usually need to visit their doctor 1-2 times a week for 2-3 months to have it inflated.

The most frequently asked questions about aesthetic procedures before, during, and after.

It is illegal for hospitals, treatment centers, and aesthetic clinics approved by the Turkish Ministry of Health to list prices for ear reconstruction surgery on their websites, and institutions that do not comply with this rule are subject to penalties. Therefore, as Nişantaşı Şükrü Yazar Aesthetic Clinic, we cannot provide you with prices for ear reconstruction surgery here. Furthermore, for Professor Dr. Şükrü Yazar, a specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, to provide accurate information regarding ear reconstruction treatment prices, he needs to analyze the patient’s current health condition, objectively evaluate their complaints, and assess their desires regarding the new ear. A thorough examination of the patient and determination of the number of surgeries required in the ear area are essential for providing the patient with a price quote.

Following ear reconstruction surgery, patients are advised not to lie on their affected ear for two weeks. After the second week, the patient can lie on their ear with a soft pillow. The head should be elevated approximately 30 degrees using pillows.

  • Swelling in the ear tissue is normal during the first few weeks. This swelling gradually decreases, and the edema in the ear subsides in the following weeks. The folds become more defined and gradually take their final shape.
  • During the first few weeks, the patient should avoid potential trauma to the treated area, as well as sunlight, saunas, and solariums to protect the treated area.
  • Since ear reconstruction surgeries are performed at intervals of several months, it takes up to a year to complete all the surgeries.
  • Creating an external ear canal generally does not improve hearing. However, if necessary, an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist will create the external ear canal after these surgeries are completed.
