Nose Tip Aesthetics (Tipplasty)

What is nose tip surgery (tipplasty)? How are drooping and deformities in the nasal tip corrected?

Nose tip surgery (tipplasty) is performed when there is no problem with the anatomical structure of the nasal bone, which is of great importance in terms of facial appearance, but usually when the cartilage, soft tissues, and angles between the nose and lips are distorted. Nose tip surgery (tipplasty) is an aesthetic operation in which various deformities and shape irregularities such as height, thickness, length, width, drooping, and sagging of the nasal tip are corrected by aesthetic and plastic surgeons.

What is the general structure of the tip of the nose?

The nose, located in the center of the face, is the organ of smell and the most noticeable feature. The nasal tip, as it’s often called by both rhinoplasty practitioners and patients, significantly alters the overall appearance of the face.

The nasal tip (referred to as the nasal tip in medical literature) is the most prominent part of the lower third of the nasal pyramid. The nasal tip consists of the most prominent points (domes) of two cartilages, the soft tissues between the domes, ligaments, and the skin covering the ligaments.

The nasal tip is the highest point of junction of the two N-shaped cartilages that form the wings of the nose. This area is very important from a rhinoplasty perspective. The height, angles, and width of the nasal cartilages are aesthetically crucial.

The thinnest skin is found at the base of the nose, and it gradually thickens towards the tip. The density and number of sebaceous glands also increase towards the tip. Therefore, the thickest skin in the nose is located at the nasal tip. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is important because it directly affects appearance at every stage, and nasal tip surgeries are a crucial part of nose surgery.

How is aesthetic nose tip surgery performed?

Nose tip aesthetic surgeries are performed using closed or open rhinoplasty techniques, with incisions made inside and/or in the front of the nose. Depending on the patient’s condition, the procedure is performed under sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia, as determined by the plastic surgeon. These surgeries take approximately 30-60 minutes. While it can be performed solely on the tip of the nose, careful planning by a specialist before the surgery is necessary to ensure aesthetic harmony with other parts of the nose.

In nose tip aesthetic (tipplasty) surgeries, incisions are made or sutures are placed in the cartilage to correct existing deformities, reshaping and supporting the cartilage structures. Sometimes, the patient may have deficiencies, insufficiencies, or collapses in the cartilage structures of the nose tip. During the surgery, cartilage taken from the nasal septum (the wall in the middle of the nose) is used as a “graft” to correct existing cartilage deficiencies, deficiencies, and collapses, thus reshaping the cartilage structures and supporting the cartilage at the tip of the nose. In addition, for patients with thick nasal skin, plastic surgeons can perform soft tissue procedures and thin the nasal skin during rhinoplasty (nose tip aesthetic surgery). These procedures bring the angle between the nose and the lips to the desired ratio. As a result of all these procedures, a nasal tip that suits the patient’s facial features and existing nasal bone structure is achieved.

In rhinoplasty, if the plastic surgeon has performed a procedure on the nasal septum (the partition between the nostrils), they may use silicone tube tampons instead of classic gauze tampons, allowing the patient to breathe more easily through the nose. Sometimes, instead of gauze tampons, your surgeon may use self-dissolving sutures to support the nasal septum. At the end of the surgery, a splint (plaster cast) or plastic bandage is applied to the nose.

What should be considered before surgery?

Nail polish, jewelry, and contact lenses should be removed before surgery. Birth control pills should be discontinued 1-2 weeks prior to surgery. Patients are advised to quit smoking approximately 2-3 weeks before the operation. Blood-thinning medications and herbal teas should be discontinued. Patients should inform their doctor of any medications they need to take during their appointment so that the treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

Can breathing problems occur after nasal tip surgery?

Breathing problems are generally not experienced by patients after nose tip surgery (tipplasty).

Who is a candidate for nose tip surgery?

Nasal asymmetry, such as a drooping nasal tip, a compressed nasal appearance, or a wide nasal tip, can be treated with this surgery. Waiting until after the age of 16-18 is preferred because the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissues complete their development after this age.

How to correct a drooping nasal tip?

In this procedure, incisions are made inside and/or in front of the nostrils. The cartilage tissue at the tip of the nose is reshaped and supported with cartilage grafts, lifting the tip of the nose. In some cases, it may be necessary to reduce the size of the nasal tip or enlarge it with cartilage grafting.

Can the nasal tip be reduced?

Yes. The nasal tip can be reduced with nasal tip surgery.

What is the ideal size for the tip of the nose?

The ideal nose shape varies depending on each patient’s facial proportions and bone structure. Generally, a nose tip height to nose length ratio of 0.67 is considered ideal. A steeper angle between the nose tip and the upper lip is preferred in men, while a wider angle is preferred in women.

Will the cartilage grafts at the tip of the nose become visible over time after tipplasty?

Cartilage grafts are frequently used in tipplasty operations (nose tip surgeries) to achieve the desired aesthetic appearance in the nasal tip area of the patient. In patients with thin skin, cartilage grafts may become visible many years after surgery. Important research has been conducted on this subject, and findings have been obtained. Things to know after nose tip (tipplasty) aesthetic surgery

Special bandages and splints are used on the outside of the nose. These bandages and splints are removed after 5-7 days. Since there is no bruising or swelling on the face or around the eyes, the recovery process for rhinoplasty is short. Patients can return to their normal daily lives shortly after the surgery.
