Nasolabial Lines

What are nasolabial lines?

Nasolabial lines, whose name comes from Latin, refer to the area between the nose and the mouth. In medical literature, they are described as depressions and folds starting from a point on the nose and extending to the mouth, while in common parlance they are referred to as smile lines or cheek lines.

Nasolabial lines, which cause a pale and tired expression on the face as we age, create prominent depressions around the cheeks and lips. Getting rid of these is now very easy. However, let’s first learn how these depressions, which begin to bother us as we get older, form physiologically.

Why and How Do Nasolabial Lines Form?
Nasolabial lines are observed in every individual from infancy. They are caused by the gradual decrease in facial fat tissue or the reduced collagen production in that area. While they are more pronounced in some individuals, they are barely visible in others. Time and genetic factors work against the formation of these lines and trigger their development. They can become more prominent over time, and genetic factors can directly influence their formation. For example, lip and cheek lines that are expected to become more prominent at age fifty may be more noticeable in some people in their thirties than expected. Factors that trigger the prominence and increased visibility of these lines include: quality of life, healthy diet, sleep patterns, seasonal conditions, sunlight, continent, country, city, sector of work, and professional life.

How are nasolabial lines corrected and what are the treatment methods?
Nasolabial lines, which are caused by a decrease in facial fat tissue or collagen production, cannot be treated with creams and collagen capsules as commonly believed. This is because the lines are located much deeper than the layers that creams can affect. Furthermore, research suggests that collagen cannot directly target this area, making it an ineffective approach. Depending on the depth of these lines, the best tested treatment method is non-surgical aesthetic procedures. For example, let’s explore together which non-surgical treatment methods Professor Dr. Şükrü Yazar, considered one of Türkiye’s leading aesthetic and plastic surgery specialists, uses for nasolabial folds (smile and cheek lines).

  • BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTULINUM TOXIN)

Botox is a highly sought-after procedure because it is painless and comfortable. The doctor determines the area to be treated for wrinkles and adjusts the dosage accordingly. A local anesthetic cream is applied to the area before the procedure begins. This makes the procedure easier for the patient and prevents them from feeling pain.

  • FILLER INJECTIONS

Filler injections for nasolabial lines can be applied to anyone under medical supervision, except for pregnant women and individuals with certain medical conditions, if needed. Pain is minimal thanks to numbing creams. A cannula needle is used to fill lines in larger areas. The needle glides through blood vessels or nerve areas to perform the procedure. Without a cannula needle, the doctor would have to insert needles in many places, resulting in a more painful procedure. The dosage of filler is determined by the doctor and varies from person to person. Because minimal amounts are used, the likelihood of facial swelling is negligible. Some individuals experience localized edema after the procedure. It takes approximately 3 weeks for this edema to subside and for the effect to settle.

  • BABY FACE BEAUTY

This method, which treats wrinkles in a short time, is performed painlessly with the help of a laser without anesthesia. The physician opens various micro-channels on the patient’s face using a laser mode. Collagen ampoules are applied to the skin, and the procedure, which takes approximately 10 minutes, is completed painlessly.

  • H-100 VACCINE

After cleansing the patient’s skin, the area designated by the physician for wrinkle treatment is numbed with creams. This light vaccine is injected in tiny amounts. No pain is felt during or after the injection. It is an easy and preferred procedure.

  • SALMON DNA

This method, derived from the DNA of salmon, promotes cell regeneration in the pitted area. It is a natural method and is painless, making it a preferred choice for patients. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes, and since there is no swelling, pain, or other discomfort afterwards, patients can resume their normal lives.

How much do nasolabial line treatments cost?
In Türkiye, Ministry of Health-approved aesthetic clinics are prohibited from sharing information about the prices of aesthetic procedures on their websites. Furthermore, the price of treatment for nasolabial folds (smile lines) and cheek lines is determined by the specialist doctor after examining the patient and analyzing the depth of the facial depressions, and then planning the appropriate treatment method.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers About Nasolabial Lines

Question 1: Is it possible to reduce or eliminate lines on the cheeks and around the lips with exercises?

Nasolabial lines cannot be completely eliminated with exercise, but the following exercises may be helpful in reducing their visibility.

  • Lip Area Inflation Exercise

Pull your lips inward until they touch. Then, inflate your mouth, keeping your lips inward. During this exercise, your neck, lower jaw, and nasolabial folds will work simultaneously. Stretching your face from the sides while performing this exercise will help you achieve clearer results. This exercise can be repeated 60-70 times until your muscles are tired.

  • Lip Pinch Exercise

Position your mouth open so that your upper and lower lips are between your teeth. Hold this position in a semi-smiling position. You can benefit from repeating this in 3 sets of 100 seconds each.

Question 2: Can nasolabial lines be removed with natural face masks and creams?

Masks and creams do not completely eliminate facial deformities. With long-term use, they can add brightness and vitality to the skin, making before-and-after analyses of the face noticeable. However, the procedure that most satisfies individuals today for treating facial and lip contouring is the nasolabial filler method.
