Head and Neck Surgery

What is Head and Neck Surgery?

Head and neck surgery is the branch of medicine that deals with all the treatments and methods planned by specialist plastic surgeons for conditions such as cancer, workplace accidents, and gunshot wounds in the head and neck region.

HeadIn the Neck Area
Reconstruction using Microsurgical Techniques

  • Example:Jaw Tumor

Many organs in the head and neck region can be repaired or reconstructed using microsurgical techniques. For example, a tumor may necessitate the surgical removal of all or part of the lower jaw. This procedure results in significant tissue loss in the jaw area, severely impairing the patient’s quality of life. This is where microsurgery comes in. With microsurgery, bone, skin, and the blood vessels supplying them are taken from the leg, groin, or back and transplanted to the area with tissue loss, thus reconstructing the jaw. To nourish these newly transplanted tissues, the blood vessels in the transplanted tissues are sutured end-to-end under a microscope to ensure blood circulation.

  • Example:Gunshot Wounds

Injuries from firearms that result in the loss of the nose and the upper and lower jaw can completely disrupt a person’s life. In such cases, tissue transplantation from the arm, hip, and leg to the facial area can be performed simultaneously.

  • Example:Esophagus

Using microsurgical techniques, the skin from the arm can also be transformed into a tube to repair the esophagus lost due to a tumor. In a patient with facial paralysis due to an accident or tumor, muscles and nerves are simultaneously transferred to restore movement to the area. In this way, function can be restored to the paralyzed area over time.

  • Example:Romberg Disease

In Romberg disease, which affects the facial area, the soft tissues of the face, along with all the fat and bone tissues, erode. This can be unilateral or bilateral. In these patients, skin from the back or abdomen is thinned and used as filler. Microsurgical techniques are also used in this procedure. In this way, the depressions in the patient’s face can be eliminated.
