Chin Enlargement

What is chin augmentation surgery?

These are cosmetic surgeries performed by plastic surgeons to correct problems caused by a small chin.

This procedure, aimed at aesthetically balancing the face and shaping the chin, not only improves the patient’s appearance but also corrects functional disorders of the chin.

Who is a candidate for chin augmentation surgery?

Chin augmentation surgery is performed on individuals with congenital or acquired chin deformities.

Are there any risks associated with chin augmentation surgery?

As with any surgery, chin augmentation surgery carries rare risks. Nowadays, implants used for augmentation are manufactured with high technology and are safe to use. However, very rarely, numbness and bleeding may occur. Additionally, in very rare cases, the body may reject the implants, and allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers used for augmentation may also occur.

What should be considered before surgery?

Nail polish, jewelry, and contact lenses should be removed before surgery. Patients are advised to quit smoking approximately 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. The use of blood-thinning medications and herbal teas should be discontinued. Patients should inform their doctor of any medications they need to take during the examination so that the treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

How is chin augmentation surgery performed?

Chin augmentation surgeries are performed by plastic surgeons. Before the surgery, X-rays of the face and chin are taken to determine the surgical approach. Depending on the desired outcome and the patient’s wishes, the appropriate implant is selected – either for the chin tip or the sides of the chin – and the surgical process begins. Chin implants are placed in front of the chin bone to lengthen or bring the chin forward, or on the sides to accentuate the chin corners. Chin implants can be made of different materials and come in various shapes and sizes. An incision is made either inside the mouth or under the chin, depending on preference. The patient and plastic surgeon decide together on the incision location during the examination. However, if the procedure is performed in conjunction with a facelift, an incision under the chin is more suitable. This allows the same incision to be used for both procedures. In some patients, the chin bone is cut and shifted downwards or forwards to lengthen the bone. The cut bone fragment is fixed with titanium plate screws. Chin augmentation surgeries typically last 30-60 minutes. The surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia.

Is jaw fracture performed during jaw augmentation surgery?

In cases where implants are not used for jaw augmentation, the jawbone is enlarged by cutting and shifting it downwards or forwards in certain areas, thus lengthening or protruding the jawbone. The cut bone fragment is fixed with titanium plates and screws. The surgery takes approximately 1-1.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

How long does it take for a patient to recover after chin augmentation surgery?

It is normal for patients to experience some pain after chin augmentation surgery. Regularly taking the painkillers prescribed by your doctor after the surgery will minimize the pain. Patients can usually return to their daily routines within 5-7 days after the augmentation surgery. Liquid and pureed foods should be consumed for a few days after the surgery. Any swelling that may occur in the chin area will subside in approximately 4-6 weeks.

What are the possible complications after chin augmentation surgery?

Although not carrying very high risks, some complications can occur after chin augmentation surgery.

  • Bruises
  • Swelling, edema
  • Implant displacement
  • Loss of sensation in the jaw area.

These complications are quite rare. Even if they do occur, they usually resolve spontaneously within a short time. Many patients leave these types of surgeries satisfied, ending their aesthetic concerns and leading lives with greater self-confidence.
