How is Nose Aesthetics Performed, and Will There Be Scars After the Procedure?
Quick answer

Nostril reshaping, a key part of rhinoplasty, addresses aesthetic concerns and breathing issues by modifying the size, shape, or position of the nostrils. The procedure involves precise incisions and sometimes cartilage support, with scars typically hidden in the natural folds of the nose.

Key takeaways
  • Nostril reshaping, a key part of rhinoplasty, addresses aesthetic concerns and breathing issues by modifying the size, shape, or position of the nostrils.
  • The procedure involves precise incisions and sometimes cartilage support, with scars typically hidden in the natural folds of the nose.
  • Nostril aesthetics can correct wide, narrow, asymmetrical, or sagging nostrils, improving both appearance and airflow.
  • Techniques vary from simple tissue repositioning to cartilage grafts from the ear, depending on the severity of the deformity.
  • Successful outcomes rely on careful preoperative planning, evaluating the patient's skin structure and overall nasal shape.

The shape and structure of the nostrils can significantly affect the overall appearance of the nose. This fact makes the nostril reshaping process a crucial stage in rhinoplasty. Extensive planning is undertaken before rhinoplasty surgery to ensure the nostrils are in harmony with the overall structure of the nose and other facial features. The shape of the nostrils has aesthetic implications as well as important functions in the breathing process. Having nostrils with a specific opening and shape is one of the most important conditions for quality breathing. We asked Professor Dr. Şükrü Yazar, a specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, about frequently asked questions regarding nostril aesthetics.

When is Nose Reshaping Needed?

Professor Dr., a specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, states that successful results can be obtained with nostril aesthetics in cases where the nostrils are too wide, too narrow or too open, where the longest part of the nostrils is transverse, or where there is bending, pulling or sagging. Şükrü Yazar continued his statement with the following sentences: “Nose aesthetics are performed by making an incision at the junction of the nostril and the cheek, taking tissue, or by providing cartilage support. If necessary, a piece of tissue from the base of the nose can be taken to correct deformities in the nostrils. Nose aesthetics is a procedure that can be applied not only to widen nostrils that are much narrower than normal, but also to narrow the nostrils inwards. Narrow nostrils can also be corrected by placing a cartilage support along the edges of the nostrils to widen the opening. In some cases, the opening can be enlarged by repositioning the sagging tissue piece. In this way, the problems of patients experiencing nasal congestion can be resolved, allowing them to breathe more easily. If there is a notch or bend at the outer border of the nostril, these problems can also be corrected with nostril aesthetics. In cases of minor problems, cartilage transplantation is not necessary. Healing can be achieved by turning the skin downwards and outwards from inside the nose. If the problem reaches serious levels, skin or cartilage tissue can be taken from the ear and placed under the nose…” It may be necessary to transplant tissue to the sides. If there is excessive sagging in the upper part of the nose, the desired result can be achieved by cutting or pulling this tissue upwards.”

The key to the success of nostril aesthetics is accurate analysis and experience.

Professor Dr. Şükrü Yazar, a specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, points out that nostril aesthetics is one of the procedures where the surgeon’s skill is paramount. In patients undergoing nostril aesthetics, the suture marks are hidden in the natural folds of the nasal skin after the procedure is completed. Following a healthy healing process, the suture marks can become invisible over time. The planning process before nostril aesthetics is significantly important. In this context, the person’s skin structure and nasal shape are evaluated as a whole.
